Christmas is just around the corner. Many of us are already making plans for the best Christmas for us and our families. We probably have a list of over three pages full of items to purchase. Shopping for multiple items in the Christmas season is an exciting experience for our kids as well as ourselves. However, this is against everything a sustainable Christmas stands for.
Green Christmas or Sustainable Christmas is a simple concept where we ensure we carry out all celebrations and activities sustainable. There are several factors to keep in mind and several actions to take to ensure we have a sustainable Christmas. Below, you will find these actions. Grab a cup of coffee and relax as we take you by hand through the things that would make your Christmas sustainable or better still, “Green”.
HOW TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS SUSTAINABLY
1. Go for a Natural Christmas Tree
You might wonder if choosing a real Christmas tree is sustainable since you are having the tree cut down. Yes, it is more sustainable when compared to its artificial counterpart. When artificial trees are used, they can last for as long as you want. However, we tend to get tired of them and ditch them overtime. This leads to the waste of resources like oil used in production. The tree ends up in the landfill or ocean which isn't good for the earth.
On the other hand, a natural tree can and should be removed with its roots. When the Christmas season is over, this tree that still has its roots can be replanted thus giving it another life. If it is impossible for you to get the tree with its root, you can recycle the rootless tree by making it into a Mulch, using the branches as a Pea Brush, or even giving it to fish farmers to use in the pond. Furthermore, the root of this tree that was left in the soil would have a chance to grow again. This is far better than using an artificial tree, and it is one way to ensure you have a sustainable Christmas.
2. Use Fabric Wrappers
Wrapping papers are one of the most wasted items during the Christmas seasons. Once people get their gifts, they ditch the wrappers which in turn goes into the ocean causing damage to water bodies. A study in 2019 by the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs shows that the number of wasted wrapping papers during the 2018 Christmas season was enough to wrap up Guernsey. By recycling just 4000 tonnes out of the 8000 tonnes of wrapping paper produced, we could save 25,000 trees. However, it is very unlikely that we recycle, and going for fabric wrappers is a better alternative.
Fabric wrappers could also serve as a "mini gift" as we would look for something to do with it instead of throwing them away especially if it is a fancy one. Ensure your fabric wrapper does not have shiny, plastic, or glittering decorations. To ensure sustainability, opt for pure fabric. Alternatively, materials like brown paper, raffia, newspaper, textile, or string should be used.
3. Harness the Power of Mass Customization
It is no doubt that one thing that defines Christmas is the exchange of gifts. Millions of presents are bought and exchanged during this season. However, a majority of people find out that they do not like the present they received. This gift, on the other hand, was manufactured through mass production which isn't sustainable as these products were made by several methods that are not eco-friendly. In the long run, people who do not like these products would throw them away thus leading to further damage to our ecosystem. All these are caused by mass production.
Mass customization on the other hand is a simple concept that allows you to customize the product you want. If you need a Christmas present for your two-year-old, only you know what your two-year-old would want and this puts you in the best position to determine the design of the present. Mass production would let you pick from the pre-designed product. Mass customization gives you the power to design the product. Once you know who you are buying a gift for, you know how to customize it so the recipient likes it. This is a more sustainable way to manufacture Christmas present as each product manufactured is aimed at a particular person. The quality derived from mass customization is better than the quantity of mass production.
Several brands focus on mass customization to ensure the sustainability of their goods. Girotti Shoes is an example of such a brand. At Girotti, there are several types of shoes to pick from. Once a choice is made, the 3D configurator gives you the power to design and customize your shoe for the specific needs of the recipient. You can choose the desired style, materials, and colors. You can also engrave greetings on the shoes to ensure they have a great Christmas. Girotti ensures sustainability and purchasing this year's Christmas gifts from them through the mass customization method of production is one way to ensure you celebrate Christmas sustainably.
As we carry on with our celebrations, we must remember the dangers we expose our planet to. The points discussed here are some of the ways to ensure we celebrate Christmas in a better and more enjoyable way - celebrating a Green Christmas. This will make us happier knowing we aren’t exposing the planet to dangers with our celebration. Sustainable fashion is the way to go.
